What is Group Income Protection (GIP)?
Group Income Protection pays a percentage of an employee’s monthly salary if they are unable to work due to long-term injury or illness. The money is paid to the employer to pass to the employee through payroll. Employers can choose both how long until the first payment is made, and how long the benefit is paid for.

When long-term illness or injury occurs, it can cause difficulties for businesses of any size. Group Income Protection insurance protects your business and employees from the impact of sickness absence, and helps employees to be healthier and happier. In addition to the monthly replacement salary for employees, it provides wellbeing support to prevent an absence becoming long-term, and the rehabilitation support to return employees to work quicker. It takes the financial and mental weight off your employees if they cannot work through long-term illness or injury, helping to attract and retain talent.
Group Income Protection pays out the employee’s monthly salary for an agreed period of time (e.g., 2 to 5 years) or indefinitely until an agreed event (e.g., reaching retirement or age 70).
This is different to Group Critical Illness or Group Life Insurance policies that pay out 4x the salary of the individual or an agreed amount.
Group Income Protection pays employees a monthly salary if they’re unable to work due to illness or injury, and helps support the employee's return to work through rehabilitation and other support services. Group Income Protection covers a wider range of illnesses and conditions than Group Critical Illness.
Group Critical Illness cover pays a lump sum of a larger amount – typically around 4x salary – for a specific severe illness covered by their policy, and prevents a person from coming back to work or continuing their duties.
Group Income Protection from YuLife is provided by MetLife. MetLife’s Group Income Protection is available for teams of 10 or more employees.

Coverage for pre-existing conditions varies among group income protection policies. Some insurers may exclude certain types of conditions, while others might offer coverage after a specified waiting period. If they are covered, this can affect the cost.
When choosing income protection, consider factors like how insurers define pre-existing conditions, such as whether a medical assessment is required and how long a condition needs to be managed before it might be covered. If you have employees with pre-existing conditions, speaking to an adviser can help you find the best options available for their situation. Always check the policy terms to understand what is and isn’t covered before making a decision.
A deferred period is the length of time you must be unable to work due to illness or injury before your group income protection payments commence. Common deferred periods range from 13 to 52 weeks, and selecting a longer deferred period can often reduce your premium costs.
