What3words has maintained growing benefits engagement levels in their workplace for the past 4 years since working with YuLife. In that time, they’ve not only grown to become one of the most engaged workplaces with YuLife, but they’ve become the perfect example of what a great tech company looks like. This UK-based organisation has 150 employees scattered across various countries — and YuLife not only helped them boost their life insurance offering but brought those people together and aligned with their ultimate mission: To create the easiest way to find and share exact locations, and ultimately, make people’s lives simpler. About what3wordsIf someone gets lost in the mountains, gets injured on a hike, or simply loses a friend in a big crowd, traditional location-sharing methods haven’t proved to be as effective as they could be. But what3words has developed a unique technology that allows individuals, businesses and emergency services to access highly accurate location sharing. By dividing the world up into 3-metre squares and titling each square with a unique 3-word combination, they’ve developed the easiest way to find and share people’s exact locations across the globe. This means emergency services can help people return to safety quicker — and users can find their desired destination easier. It’s an incredible product helping make the world more interconnected and protected than ever. And back in 2019, what3words decided it was time to reflect those exact values within the benefits and insurance they offer their team. That’s when they made the switch to YuLife insurance and employee benefits. The goalsWhat3words leaders wanted to take a holistic approach when investing in support and protection for their team members' health. They wanted their employees to be able to show up to work every day happy, healthy and as the best version of themselves. That’s when they discovered YuLife, which aligned perfectly with their ultimate goals and interests as a company: 1. Reaching ESG goals and supporting the greater community (All-time figures)As a company so focused on supporting the community and giving back to people, they found YuLife was a perfect fit not only for supporting their employees but accomplishing their mission to make a difference in the world and connect people.“As a global company, we’re really passionate about supporting environmental causes and offset our carbon footprint,” expresses Alys, Head of People at what3words, “This is a lovely way that employees can do this directly and be conscious of their own personal contribution. Food’s a really big thing in our office too — we regularly hold company lunches and it’s really great for us to be aware of our own privilege here and to be able to share our love of food by donating meals to ensure that more people are able to benefit.” "It’s a real testament to the breadth and flexibility that you get from YuLife that we’re able to give back to communities and the environment in addition to all the daily steps we’re getting in,” - Alys, Head of People, what3words2. Offering more than traditional life insurance Part of what attracted what3words to YuLife was the ability to not just support the community in multiple ways, but also holistically serve their people with a product that offered more support than basic life insurance. After all, if their employees could be supported physically mentally and financially, they could accomplish their mission of coming to work each day as their best selves and truly focus on their larger mission as a company.Sophie Pohling, People Manager at what3words expressed how they wanted “Something that offered more than your average life insurance provider, as W3W isn't your average company,” she says. “We loved the gamification of taking your wellbeing seriously through either a walk or meditation and this, in turn, encourages employees to fit this into their day-to-day. If someone looks after themselves both inside and out, they are much less likely to be absent from work due to illness.”“I love that YuLife provides such helpful tools as the YuMatter EAP,” Alys adds. “It's a great resource for employees to use should they need some professional help such as coaching, life changes or mental health-related — and the Digital GP provides employee’s flexibility.” After speaking to other employees and members of the People Team, it’s clear that it’s changed the way their employees feel about the company. It’s truly made them feel cared for in all areas of life — from mental, and physical to financial. 3. Align their offerings with their company values “Our company values are really important to us and we refer to them on a regular basis,” says Alys. “They really are part of everyday dialogue. One of them is ‘All in’ and we actively encourage employees to take time off if they aren't feeling 100% to rest and recover so that they can bring their whole self to work when they’re better.”And one more value they live by is “Help and be Helped”, which is all about building a sense of community where we help and get the same help in return. For that reason, Alys explained how “It’s really important that our benefits reflect our values — and I feel like the wide range of support offered by YuLife gives our people such excellent flexibility to manage their own wellbeing as individuals.” And especially for remote team members, the app has offered them a personalised way to practise self-care, while also connecting employees across teams and locations. The Impact (All-time figures)Since What3Words joined YuLife back in 2019, they’ve only seen upward-trending success in terms of engagement and wellbeing. With over £16K earned in rewards from grocery vouchers to ESG donations, the impact has been paying off for the w3w People Team. “It’s really nice that our team’s hard work is paying off for them,” Alys expresses. “You can regularly hear people saying what they spend their rewards on and it’s great that again, there’s so much flexibility here so people can go for what they really need. Feeling like they’re getting a little extra to help, just by encouraging healthy habits, is really reassuring particularly at the moment with the financial crisis: it’s great we’re able to support employees beyond their paycheque and that will just provide added support for mental health.” For Sophie, the best part of the app is “Knowing that when I create these healthy habits each day, I am able to treat myself to something from the rewards section and give myself a bit of self-care. The most recent thing I rewarded myself with was a Sainsbury voucher to use towards my very large food shop! It really helped me not worry so much!” Results show that 33% of employees are meditating daily (moving up steadily since implementing) and the team is especially engaging with the team leaderboards. It’s built a sense of competition and community within the workplace that hadn’t always been there. Measuring success with YuLifeIt’s always difficult to measure the ROI of a wellbeing programme or life insurance offering. But YuLife’s analytics feature makes it much easier to demonstrate the impact, as well as keep track of employee wellbeing across teams — both in-office and remote. “From the quarterly reports that we receive, I can see that people really engage with the rewards side of the app to either treat themselves or do good in the world — the most popular ones are Amazon or Earthly,” says Sophie. “I think because I talk about Yulife with lots of people, I know quite a few save up their YuCoin to do a big Christmas shop or get birthday presents etc.” And when it comes to measuring success, the What3Words team has found it really comes down to usage volume. “On a day-to-day basis, we can see all the people engaging with the app, talking about their place on the leaderboard and getting their steps in,” Alys adds. “I know that just engaging encourages healthy habits which will have a knock-on effect on overall wellbeing and therefore productivity and ability to come to work — which will always be a great return on our investment.”About YuLife.YuLife is working to reimagine the insurance industry by protecting lives, rewarding living and inspiring life.
