In the competitive landscape of today's job market, what role do employee benefits have in attracting and retaining talent? The statistics tell us that 70% of employees are more likely to stay with a company that offers well-structured benefits packages, and 65% of candidates consider employee benefits a crucial factor when evaluating job offers. But what are the opinions beyond the figures? Sometimes, anecdotal insights can be enlightening, so we spoke to four employees from different industries to get an honest take on what they really think about their benefits. Here’s what they had to say:1. Sarah (36), Marketing Manager, Tech StartupSarah’s Perspective:"I've been working at this tech startup for about two years now, and although the benefits weren’t the reason I came to the business, the perks were definitely attractive. In previous jobs, I never really paid much attention to benefits but here, the organisation puts a big emphasis on its benefit during the hiring process: the Life Insurance cover is more than previous organisations, and they offer Group Health Insurance as an additional package. There’s gym memberships, and deals."Healthcare:"It’s not something that would have been important to me historically, but with NHS waiting times increasing and a growing family, the option of a Health Insurance plan has been of increasing interest. We also have access to free counselling sessions and mental wellness programmes, but they’re not something I’ve ever used.”Wellness Programmes:"We also have a wellness stipend that we can use for anything from gym memberships to meditation apps. I’ve used mine for a yoga class subscription, and that’s been amazing. The company also organises regular wellness challenges and workshops, but if I’m honest I could give or take these! I like my colleagues, but sometimes after a long week I’m keen to get home.”2. James (45), Sales Manager, Manufacturing James’s Perspective:"Working in sales isn’t always easy, but the benefits we receive here certainly help smooth out some of the rough edges. I’ve been with the company for seven years, and I've seen our benefits package change a lot over the years: there’s definitely been a shift towards better mental health support. But they aren’t services I’ve ever used. “I don’t think benefits are what solely attracts me to a company, but they do make you feel like a company is investing in you. I wouldn’t say no to having more.”Work-Life Balance:"Our company places a strong emphasis on work-life balance. We have a generous holiday allotment, and they’re very supportive of us actually using it. Additionally, we have a flexible working arrangement, which means I can work from home a couple of days a week. This flexibility has been valuable, especially with young children."Professional Development:"The company also offers a tuition reimbursement programme and regular professional development workshops. I’ve taken advantage of these to complete a certification that’s relevant to my role. It’s reassuring to know that the company supports my growth and career advancement."3. Priya (37), Designer, Marketing AgencyPriya’s Perspective:“Money is the main form of compensation that I’m after in my job — or at least, it always was. But my last company did have YuLife Life Insurance, with all of the employee app benefits that come with it and it did shift my perspective a bit. I definitely knew what benefits were available to me more than at other businesses, and it did make them easier to use. “I also found the point system quite addictive — not something I’d usually go for, but it does feel good when you get to buy something ‘for free’.”Healthcare:"At my current job, I have Health Insurance cover, as well as a degree of Life Insurance. These are things I would consider when moving jobs — and I do count them alongside the salary in terms of compensation.”Parental Leave:"One of the standout benefits for me has been the parental leave policy. When I had my daughter two years ago, I was able to take six months of full paid leave. This time was crucial for me and my family, and I’m grateful that the company supports working parents so well."Employee Assistance Programs:"We also have an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) that provides resources for everything from financial advice to counselling services. I used the EAP to get some financial planning help — because it was available and free. It’s great to know there’s a support system in place for when life gets complicated."4. Jenni (25), Customer Service Representative at an e-commerce platformJenni’s Perspective:“My company has a lot of great benefits — gym membership, which I use, and we have unlimited holiday (subject to approval). I know that a lot of people in the business don’t use that, but it’s good to know the option is there.”Life Insurance:"It’s not something that’s a big consideration for me, to be honest! Health or Dental Insurance would be, though.”Employee Assistance Programmes:"It’s not something I knew existed… and I’m not sure it’s something I’d want to use through my business. I think if I needed mental health support I’d be more likely to go to my doctor.”About YuLifeYuLife is working to reimagine the insurance industry by protecting lives, rewarding living and inspiring life.
