Valentine's Day is all about spreading the love, and what better excuse to remind your people you care for them? Here are a few tips on how to support your employees on this special day.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, all everyone wants is to spend time with their significant others. But as business leaders and HR professionals, it’s also the time to reflect on another important relationship in your everyday lives - the relationship between employers and employees.

Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to start showing your love for your employees, and pave the way for a whole year of appreciation!

1. Celebrate their achievements with shout outs

Everybody likes to be acknowledged. Your employees want to feel like you cherish them as people and not just employees, and that you recognise their hard work and the value they bring and contribute to your business.

A great way to do that is by giving regular shout outs to employees. They can be from the management team or even open to everyone; they can be done in a dedicated Slack channel or in a weekly or monthly meeting - the sky's the limit.

At yulife, we have a company-wide meeting every Thursday afternoon, where we give anonymous shout outs to our colleagues. It’s great fun, and makes everyone feel treasured.

2. Send them appreciation cards

If public shout outs are not your thing, you can always opt for the more personal route. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a heartfelt note written on some beautiful stationery?

Just jot down a few appreciative comments on a nice card and surprise your employees with a personal message that will warm their hearts and inspire them. And as a yulife customer, you get a free £10 voucher to buy stationery from the chic brand Papier, so you’ll even save some money on an array of stunning cards!

3. Help them clear their minds with meditation

Modern life can be extremely stressful, and work is, more often than not, a significant contributor to our stress. So helping your people take a step back and focus on the moment rather than that 5pm deadline they have will always be appreciated, and what better way to do that than to host meditation sessions for your team?

You don’t even have to do anything big - if you have someone on your team who’s a mindfulness enthusiast get them to host it, or simply have your people download a meditation app to their phone and clear a room for meditation. There are many options to choose from, but with yulife app has integrated with Headspace and Calm. With the Calm app, your people get a 3-month free trial followed by 50% off a premium annual subscription with #1 meditation app Calm, so they can start off their workplace meditation journey on the right foot.

4. Make an environment that will inspire them

Working in a messy, grey and boring environment is never inspiring for people. Try to make sure your office is organised and welcoming, so that your people will feel like going into a workspace that is inspiring them rather than bringing them down.

A great way to do this is with flowers and plants. Not only do they immediately spark joy and make everything look beautiful and smell nice, but they also have other significant mental health benefits. For example, being around plants was found to improve concentration and memory, speed up recovery from certain illnesses, enhance social skills and energy levels, and generally make people happier.

With a few plants and flowers, you can really change up your office and show your people you genuinely care for them. And with yulife’s exclusive 20% discount for Bloom & Wild, you can get them delivered right to your door with bargain prices!

5. Put comfort first

It’s not just about ambience - your employees also need to feel physically comfortable. Make sure your chairs are up to standard, ask your team if they require any lumbar support and invest in standing desks. It may be worthwhile to check if your employees are sitting comfortably by doing a desk health assessment. Not only will this make your employees feel loved and cared for, but it will also prevent other health issues in the future which will save you money in the long term on sick days and loss of productivity.

6. Support a cause they care about

Your employees are great people, and they have causes they passionately care about. Encourage them to set up volunteering days for the charities they support, boot sales to raise money, or food collection. You can also make a donation as a business to a charity your employees feel a close connection to - this will make them feel like you’re really standing with them. If you have yulife, you can also remind them they can donate the yucoin they’ve earned for walking and meditating through For Good Causes, which allows yulife to donate their yucoin to up to 17,000 different charities.

7. Take them out to lunch

We all have to eat, but sometimes work lunches can be a bit dull. Many people feel the need to eat at their desks, new employees are sometimes too shy to find people to go to lunch with, and spending money on eating out is no-one’s favourite. Instead, why not treat your team to a nice lunch every once in a while? This will encourage team bonding, make sure everyone gets to know everyone, and show your people you don’t only care for them when they work - but also when they’re on a break.

8. Listen and take them seriously

The most important thing when it comes to showing your employees the love is to actually listen to them. It’s really difficult to figure out what it is that they want if you don’t pay attention to their concerns, their personality and the culture you’ve built at your office. Ask them how they’re doing, show an interest in their lives outside of work, and take into account their feedback. Nothing says ‘I love you’ more than feeling listened to, respected and like your word actually matters.
