When it comes to wellbeing benefits, businesses often find it difficult to find a solution that will really engage employees and deliver tangible change. In recent years, more and more companies are realising that in order to do that, they need to provide more than just a benefit - they need to create a culture of wellbeing.
YuLife aims to drive engagement and facilitate employee interaction through our gamified app, which rewards users for caring for their wellbeing. We heard from Sophie Pohling, People Advisor at What3words, about how the app has been fundamental in supporting overall wellness and community spirit amongst her team.
What3words is the simplest way to talk about location. It has divided the world into 3m x 3m squares, each with a unique 3 word address. Enabling people, businesses and governments to operate more efficiently by referring to any precise location – a delivery entrance, a picnic spot or a drone landing point – using just three simple words.
“I’ve really benefited from the fitness side of the app and I’m now walking a lot more.”
As a rapidly growing startup continuously looking to hire and retain top talent, the leadership team What3words really understand the value of giving their people a comprehensive employee benefits package that they engage with. So, in 2019, they selected YuLife as their insurance and wellbeing provider.
Every day, employees at what3words are rewarded for healthy habits, like walking and meditating. Participating in a challenge, for instance, a 5 or 30-minute walk, rewards the employee with YuCoin - YuLife’s currency of wellbeing, which can be redeemed for vouchers at leading retailers.
Sophie herself is a very keen YuLife user and has made a number of positive lifestyle changes as a result. “I’ve really benefited from the fitness side of the app and I’m now walking a lot more. I use the 30-minute walk and meditation challenges the most and tend to do these first thing in the morning and at lunchtime.”
When onboarding new members to the what3words team, Sophie is always excited to highlight YuLife as one of their employee benefits: “I’m the biggest advocate of YuLife. I always tell people that I have acquired so many Avios points through YuCoin that I could fly to South Africa for just £50! What’s not to love?”
The majority of the team are avid users of the app, and the virtual company leaderboard, where individuals can compete to reach a podium for walking the most steps, has been a great source of office chat. “We’re a young tech company with an average age of 35 - most people are quite fit and active and naturally competitive, so the YuLife app has been great. The leaderboard brings everyone together and the team really benefits from the virtual currency.”
The ability for colleagues to create their own Yumojis to take on their journey around the Yuniverse has been a great way to express individuality. “We all really like the avatars feature - it’s a really fun thing to have and adds that bit of extra personalisation. It makes the look and functionality of the app really good.”
“The leaderboard brings everyone together and the team really benefits from the virtual currency.”
The healthy competition has encouraged community spirit and enabled colleagues to connect during challenging times. Sophie shared how YuLife brought the team together during the winter months in lockdown: “Last year, we ran a November walking month, as a way to give people an incentive to get out and about when it was colder outside. We then followed this with a walking team meet-up in early December. It was great that we could incorporate the YuLife app into our company Christmas plan!”
By changing their habits with YuLife, the what3words team has been inspired to achieve some fantastic goals, completing a sponsored walk to raise funds for the Captain Tom Foundation, which supported those feeling lonely during lockdown.
The YuLife leaderboard was a great motivator for the team, and many used the challenge as an opportunity to “clock more steps and move up on the leaderboard.” The team were also given personalised surges; periods of increased YuCoin earn rate for completing walking challenges, as an added bit of encouragement throughout the week.
What’s more, the team at What3words value the peace of mind and sense of security that comes with having their lives insured through YuLife. “Life insurance is such an important benefit to have and people in the team really take comfort in knowing that in that eventuality they have the protection in place for their loved ones.”
YuLife is a tech-driven insurance company on a mission to inspire life and turn financial products into a force for good. By harnessing the power of gamification and the latest behavioural science, YuLife rewards healthy living and puts everyday wellness within reach of everyone.
